AS YOUR TOURGUIDE/DRINKING BUDDY/KARAOKE CONFIDANTE

►MEETING FOR BREAKFAST/LUNCH◄
Weekdays I work at an office close to 麹町駅 (Kojimachi station) on the 有楽町線 (Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Subway Line) and can meet before work (I start at 9:15am) as well as during lunch Tuesday through Friday, from 12pm-1pm.

►OTHER TIMES◄
Between teaching English on the side and doing shows around Tokyo, my schedule in the evening and on weekends has me running around a bit. But I do try to keep track of everything here - any chunk of time marked “空き” is available time to spend with you (^_^)! I suggest viewing the calendar using the “weekly” view option (週), which you can select in the upper right hand corner of the page.

►BY PHONE/INTERWEBS◄
I’m on Google chat (danielmorito) and AIM (koshershamisen) the entire working day and - if things are quiet in the office - I can chat/guide you around. And while I tend to keep my cell phone off during working hours, you can reach me at the office - within Tokyo, the number is (0)3-3512-3711. Please note that although the phone will always be answered in Japanese - you can just say “Hello. May I please speak with Danny Katz?” and whoever answers will connect you to my desk.

TRANSPORTATION/NAVIGATION

►JAPAN RAIL PASS◄
I highly recommend the Japan Rail Pass if you’re going to travel a lot by 新幹線 (shinkansen/bullet train). (But for travel just within Tokyo, it’s probably not worth the money - see information below on discounted daily passes for Tokyo’s subways). If you buy a Japan Rail Pass, read all the information here. You need to get the pass purchased and voucher taken care of BEFORE you arrive in Japan.

►TRAIN SCHEDULING GUIDES◄
For those of you familiar with www.hopstop.com, you’ll appreciate both of the following websites as they allow you to plan your travel routes, departure and destination times, as well as providing you the total cost of the trip:
1. www.jorudan.co.jp/english
2. www.hyperdia.com (The advantage to Hyperdia is that it allows you to deselect “Nozomi” 新幹線 from the routes it pulls from - which is important if you’re using the Japan Rail Pass (as the Japan Rail Pass will not allow you to travel on Nozomi).
When you select a station at www.jorudan.co.jp/english or www.hyperdia.com, double check that you’re selecting the right one as there are multiple stations in Japan that share the same name. (Don’t assume that the station that the search engine defaults to is the correct one).

►TRAIN STATIONS◄
Many stations in Tokyo are rather large with extensive exits, tracks deep underground, lots of escalators, cute shops to distract you, etc. - always give yourself at least 10 extra minutes to get where you’re going - and if you’re wandering through 新宿駅 (Shinjuku Station) maybe even more time than that.

►TRANSIT MAPS/INFORMATION◄
A comprehensive map of the two Tokyo subway systems (the privately owned Tokyo Metro and the government owned Toei) can be found here.
. If you have a Japan Rail Pass, this map of all the Japan Rail routes around the Tokyo area should be useful too. Also note that in addition to the subways and Japan Rail, there are extensive private rail companies, identified here.

►TRANSIT DISCOUNT OPTIONS◄
While the Japan Rail Pass will allow you to get around Tokyo on Japan Rail (“JR”) commuter lines, you should consider subway day passes to cover the entire area. Tokyo Metro and Toei both have separate all day pass options (that I think run around 700 Yen each), but for the money, you’re probably best off with the 1000円 per day all-access day pass (Tokyo Metro and Toei combined). You can, of course, buy tickets as you go, with the cost determined by distance. Regular rail tickets can only be purchased at stations, not in advance. Information on discount passes for subways can be found here).

►SUICA/PASSMO◄
This package might be worth looking into, if for no other reason than using the SUICA/PASSMO touch system is much easier than trying to figure out transit costs all the time. It’s like a MetroCard and it comes as a package deal if you take the Narita Express train. You can easily refill (add money to your balance) your SUICA/PASSMO card in any station.

►WHICH TRAIN/TRACK◄
It is fairly common for private train lines, commuter rails and subways to run on the same track (where the train is under different management in different sections of its route) so don’t be completely perplexed if you get on a subway and the last stop appears to be somewhere in the hinterlands of suburbia, or if you hop on a commuter rail and it routes you through subway stations. (For NYC folk - it’s like seeing a LIRR train pull into the 23rd St./8th Ave. station, or a 2 train heading out to upstate New York).

►THE LAST TRAIN◄
All subways and trains stop running around midnight to 5am. And Tokyo is huge. Just keep this in mind as you could easily blow hundreds of dollars on taxis if you’re not careful. And you also want to avoid the last train on Friday nights - it can be so crowded your feet won’t touch the ground. An experience, but one I would recommend you best avoid.

►MAKING SENSE OF JAPANESE ADDRESSES◄
Tokyo isn’t so much a city as a sprawling metropolis which is broken into 23 special wards, but those wards are referred to in English as cities. So you may come across something located in “Shinjuku (City).” This is a good explanation of those zany addresses you’re likely to see. Needless to say, always have a map or good GPS handy!

AT NARITA AIRPORT

►RENTAL CELL PHONE◄
If you don’t want to use your American cell phone while here because of costs, rental phones at the airport are pretty cheap. (Green/gray payphones are not nearly as common as they used to be, but you can usually find one near any convenience store or train/subway station, and unlike the ones in the U.S. 99% of
them work perfectly.)

►LUGGAGE DELIVERY◄
If your luggage is particularly bulky and you don’t want to bring it up and down tons of stairs, you can have the luggage shipped to your first destination. If you anticipate buying lots of heavy souvenirs, you can have your hotel coordinate a pre-flight luggage pickup, although I believe the requirement is that your luggage has to be completely packed at least a day before your trip out of Narita.

COMMUNICATING

►GENERAL◄
Although they may be shy and hesitant to speak, a lot of people in Tokyo can handle basic English, such as giving directions. You may even find that Police Officers and Rail/Transit Employees pride themselves on speaking English, no matter how grammatically wrong it may be. Also - most tour guide books list basic survival phrases in Japanese - if you want free resources, check out About.com (but be warned, you could easily kill a few days just browsing there).

►IN TRANSIT◄
Even if you avoid rush hour, you may find yourself on crowded trains, buses, etc. Aside from making sure your luggage takes up minimal space (hold your backpack in front of you if possible so you’re not smacking into people behind you), the best word you can say is すみません (soo-me-mah-sen), also passable as すいません (soo-ee-mah-sen) - it translates loosely into “sorry/excuse me/please move.” Use this when you’re getting onto a crowded train, off a crowded train and if you bump into someone. If you really want to be assertively polite, you can also say ごめんなさい (gommen-na-sai) which means “sorry” as well as すみません・おります (soo-me-mah-sen, oh-ree-mah-soo) - “excuse me, please move, i’m exiting [the train, bus]”

PLANNING YOUR SCHEDULE

►WEEKLY EVENT CALENDARS◄
http://www.timeout.jp/en/tokyo
http://metropolis.co.jp/

►LIVE MUSIC◄
http://www.tokyogigguide.com/

►FOOD◄
1. www.bento.com
2. Also, an excellent suggestion from my friend Graeme: “Tell them to go to department store basements and buy lunch boxes, then eat said lunchboxes on the roof of the department store. Top recommendations are Isetan Shinjuku and Mitsukoshi Ginza. Also, don’t be shy to buy a whole cake and eat it up there.”

►CAFFEINE◄
There are plenty of great coffeeshops and smaller chains throughout Tokyo, but if you need your Starbucks fix (I don’t judge - jetlag can be a helluva drug :P), you can find locations here:

LODGING

►HOTELS◄

1. Hotel Sunroute Shinjuku - not super cheap, but super convenient being a 5-10 minute walk from JR Shinjuku station, which gives you access to a ton of train and subway lines.

2. Hotel Maruchu - not as central (think this one is closer to Ueno/Minami-Senju). Might be dumpy in comparison to Sunroute, but safe and cheap.

No magic formula. :P But I’ve been meaning to blog about my experiences with fundraising for “Orbiting” for some time now. This rambling mess is still quite the draft, but it’s something to kick around until I have time to edit more thoroughly…

So you want to raise funds, eh?!

1. What’s your deadline?
2 weeks works great but you might burn out - it’s an intense process. 1 month is standard. Anything longer and folks lose interest. You’ll probably lose interest too!

2. How much do you want to raise?
You need to find that scrubland between realistic and optimistic. And when doing that, keep in mind that even the most generous donors may be experiencing “compassion fatigue,” i.e. they may have already given time and energy towards your cause. How can you get them to give again?

3. If you don’t reach your fundraising goal, can you still complete the project?
If not, why not? Think about having different checkpoints, e.g. if you raise $X, you do Y, but if youraise $10X, you create a unicorn that shits glitter while filing your taxes! Whut?

4. What exactly are donations going to?
You can’t just go in saying “just film costs” or “just a new album” (or in my case “hairplugs” ><) Provide as much detail as possible, ideally in a clean to read, organized manner. And definitely more pithy than this blog post. Things you might want to include: $___ for filming, $___ for MetroCards,$ ___ for heavy duty extension cables, $___ for mastering, $___ for therapy and zoloft (you think I’m kidding?) Also think if any of these costs can be offset by specific non-monetary donations, e.g. you might not realize that your friend down the road has the perfect tripod. Or your other friend is a pharmacologist. I don’t judge.

6. What kind of “rewards” can you offer donors to thank them?
Don’t waste your funds away on thank you gifts! Think of low cost or free and thoughtful thank yous. Dinner with the filmmakers? A naked ride along the Gowanus? (ew) GET CREATIVE! Just don’t get obscene. Kickstarter has some restrictions, i.e. no sling-heavy orgies involving furries as a reward. Freak… Let’s cuddle?

7. What fundraising model are you going with?
You can go with the panic-inducing all-or-nothing approach of Kickstarter.com - where you get 0% if you don’t raise 100% of your goal. But there’s also the option of getting whatever you raise via a site like indiegogo.com. They both have their advantages and disadvantages, but at least from my experience… it’s easier to raise funds if it you put a bit of urgency into it. And competition. Folks donate for all sorts of reasons - tap into this. Or ask them to tap into you. BOOM! Ok, I keed. Not really.

8. How accurate is your budget?
Although the amounts differ, I think almost all crowdfunding sites keep some of what you make (how else would they stay in business)? So for example - even if you raise $5,000, you’re not gonna see $5,000 in your bank account.

9. How do your donors want to be contacted?
Yes, this sounds like cheesy demographic research but you MUST know who you’re pitching to, especially if you’re trying to get beyond the usual supporters (friends and family). Are your donors web-savy? Do they live in Facebook’s newsfeed? Are they still forwarding you political humor emails? Do they prefer to be called first? You need to reach them in their own environment, not expect them to come to you. And yes, this might mean hanging out at The Boiler Room (face down ass up on the pool table) on a Tuesday night. Such are the sacrifices we make for our art.

10. When?
Chances are, most of your potential donors are like me, stuck in a 9-5 watching paint (or their fingernails) dry. There’s a good chance a 1pm Hump Day (Wednesday) email will be noticed, whereas one sent Monday at 9am will be lost in someone’s hangover eyes. Also, think about when pay day is - most people will blow through a portion of their paycheck on or around the 1st. Yay Amerikuh and credit card debt?

11. Are you talking about the campaign BEFORE it starts?
You want people to know about your campaign before you start trying to collect funds. Build buzz. Blog about it. Facebook post about it. Tweet about it. Call people and let them know about it. Don’t just spring the project on people out of the blue. Ride a unicorn into your office cafeteria while in drag and announce it. Or at least send an fax. Well, in Japan at least. The only place where faxes THRIVE…

12. How much time do YOU have?
Yes, I was able to raise $3,000 during my last Kickstarter, but it almost came at the loss of my (debatable) sanity. If I actually break down the amount raised by hours invested (without ADHD meds so you can only imagine) I wouldn’t be surprised if it fell around $5 an hour. Inefficiency? No. I call it… imagi… SQUIRREL! Between blogging, instagramming, writing individual messages to donors, thanking people on Facebook, organizing my contacts, getting work done, eating, sleeping, it took forever. I posted at least 4 incentive videos with new music, previews, etc.

13. Some thoughts about using Facebook as your campaign promotion headquarters…

For reasons I still can’t figure out, my Facebook fan page is pretty much dead, whereas my personal page is a jumpin. Maybe it’s the references I often post to Hello Kitty. Shrug. Something to think about when you’re promoting. And my Twitter? It’s active, but not for me. Nicky Minaj posts quite a bit (yes, I follow her!)

I tried posting re Kickstarter on my personal Facebook page 1-2 times a day, ideally around 12pm NYC time) as I figured most people would see it during that time. When posting, I thanked donors with the @tag while including a link to my most recent Kickstarter update video. This means that Facebook friends connected to anyone who pledged would see the campaign - and possibly trigger Facebook’s ever quirky algorithmic whatevers so that the Kickstarter campaign gets more prominent placement in everyone’s newsfeed. Yes, it was ridiculously spamtastic (and carpal tunnel inducing) but…

I copied each posting either word for word or some variation of it WITHOUT the @tag (but with a link to the Facebook event page promoting the campaign link) on my Facebook FAN page. I also posted identical text in the body of the Facebook event invite.

Many of my friends who posted the Kickstarter link to their Facebook walls didn’t @tag me so I wasn’t aware of their support - pay extra attention to what’s showing up in your newsfeed. If you see something, say something (thank you, MTA) or at least “like it,” comment back to them with an @tag thanks.

Give your fans reasons to celebrate (“milestones”) are particularly good for Facebook and other social spaces. Mine were $1000, 50%, 75%, 85%, when I gave birth to twins, when the mothership visited me, etc.

Beware of the “backlash” that comes with constant posting. In my case, several friends hid me in their newsfeed (honestly, I can’t blame them - I’d do the same). While this isn’t a problem per se, as a result they didn’t see my status updates about my NYC trip and we never met up. There’s a balance between self-promotion and being annoying on Facebook, and I have yet to come close to mastering it. MORE HELLO KITTY!

14. General thoughts in no particular order…

While exciting, crowdfunding is also emotionally draining - once you get into that weird space between commerce and art, it takes a lot of effort to not tie your value, worth, etc. to how much money you bring in.

My previous fundraising attempts have bordered on begging - HUGE mistake. Emphasizing the TEAM DANNY or some spin on TOGETHER WE CAN DO THIS (thanks, Obama?) works much better, plus you’ll feel better about what you’re doing. No one likes to beg, no one likes a begger. If you want to play the underdog card, at least put a positive spin on it!

You may be surprised at your biggest donors - mine were kind folks I don’t speak with that often. One friend, in contrast, responded with a “What is this shit? I’m not donating. But I’ll buy you a beer when you’re back here.” It was tasty :)

As much as I liked using Facebook for fundraising, it started to feel like I was back in a high school cafeteria, replete with cliques, infighting, political squabbles, etc. If your fans fall into warring factions or groups, getting them to rally behind you will be tricky. It’s probably worth playing up the “communities” you are already a part of - e.g. filipino, Asian-American, LGBT, corporate, non-profit, etc. or… the things you all share in common. Really depends on your Facebook experiences and connections.

Along those lines, if you haven’t yet, definitely join any alumni groups (on Facebook AND LinkedIn) before you start. I’ve gotten some great support from alumni I’ve never even met. And this is from Sarah Lawrence. If you went to a larger, frat-centric school, get your brothers/sisters to pledge.

There are folks that scan Kickstarter for projects they want to support. Don’t be surprised if you get funded by people who you don’t recognize. Appreciate it. It’s one of the quirky beauties of crowdfunding.

KEEP AT IT NO MATTER WHAT! Update and be involved in the campaign regularly (i.e. if you’re going with the more traditional month long fundraising time period, may post a few times a week rather than daily). Also, keep in mind that funding will be extremely uneven (i.e. big spike in the beginning of your campaign, then leveling off - sometimes to a trickle, with another spike towards the end).

Whatever you do, don’t get frustrated - I read somewhere that over 40% of Kickstarters DON’T get funded. I’m honestly amazed that we were able to pull in what we did in such limited time.

15. Finally, have a look at successful campaigns for ideas, inspiration, strategy, etc.

I personally like Alfa Garcia’s (http://www.alfa-music.com) recent Kickstarter: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/alfamusic/alfa-you-her-next-ep

Good luck!
Danny Katztag:dannykatz.com,2005:Post/2487742012-11-08T21:14:13-05:002022-05-30T03:01:58-04:00"Orbiting" will be available for purchase soon enough!...

"Orbiting" will be available for purchase soon enough!

Hello! TOKYO BOOT UP! Is now in its third year. As the promoter, we are always thinking about how to give back to the performers by reflecting on our past experiences. We have yet to figure out how, but we understand that we have to strive to create the foundations so that we can say “aha!” in 3 years’ time. ■ Our motto last year was “from Japan to the world”, which led us to participating in SXSW. This year, we have teamed up with the world’s largest digital distribution company, TUNECORE, to create more opportunities around the world. The pre-existing music industry framework is being torn down and it is instead becoming even more underground than before. We are at the beginning of a new generation where artists can connect directly to their fans. When this becomes more of the norm, we believe that events such as SXSW where new acts can be “sampled” will be recognized and understood. ■ With that in mind, we want to create a new “sampling” ground in the Japanese style with TOKYO BOOT UP!. We hope you will support us.

❏Shin Tokyo Daigaku was created in May to hold TOKYO BOOT UP! classes.

The first semester (6 classes in total) gathered 230 students, surpassing our expectations.

The second semester will start in July. During this term, we will take an in-depth look at TUNECORE, which will be a new venue for Japanese musicians to promote their music.

❏TUNECORE was created in the US in 2007 and has grown to become the world’s largest digital distributor.

It is able to stream media worldwide, and gives back to the artist 100%. TUNECORE’s Japanese service starts this summer.

❏As long as you have rights, you want to learn more about them! So what are your rights?

You have various rights when releasing music, whether by using TUNECORE or through other channels.

It is important to know your rights in order to maximise your opportunities and to create/maintain collaborations.

Professor Koji Iida is the leading practitioner on licensing contracts both domestically and internationally – don’t miss this!

❏A musician will be a guest at every lecture.

Our classes have gained popularity as you will be able to meet important people from the industry and beyond, to exchange information and thoughts with. Moreover, participants from TOKYO BOOT UP! (both current and previous) qualify for a discounted rate of 1,000 yen (including reception fee).

So Kickstarter’s getting serious on my folk ass. The deadline clock is no longer in days but HOURS. AAAAAAAAAAH. Tick tock tick tock tick tock…

So yeah, we’ve only got 64 hours to raise an additional $416.

And with Kickstarter, if we don’t reach $3,000 within 64 hours, the project will not be funded, and I will turn into a wilted, defeated, sad banjo. And cry into my green tea. THE HORROR!

So I come to you with a Tumblicious favor:

If you’re active on Tumblr, pretty please Retumble this post.

And for those on Twitter or Facebook, pretty-please-with-mandolins-on-top share the following link with your friends (by tweet and/or wallpost/status update: http://kck.st/LDTD1D

You might want to add your own story about how 80s flavored folk-pop has changed your life and given you the power to walk over hot coals! Or um, at least, given you something pleasant to listen to during your commute :) And if anyone has any doubts as to the audio caliber of this project, please invite them to listen to songs from 2009’s “Japanese Satellites” at www.dannykatz.com.

And heck, since I ain’t too proud to beg, I’ll gladly send you a free copy of the new album when it’s done. Because you are Tumblriffic!!!!

And I’d therefore be remiss if I didn’t refer to last year’s West Coast tour which, at the risk of sounding trite, was f’n amazing. While I often cringe at how we portray ourselves to the rest of the world, America as a country has some of the most amazing people and BEAUTIFUL scenery. AND OMG, THE SKY AT NIGHT WHEN DRIVING THROUGH THE COUNTRY. (T_T)

In any event, the below lyric came from observations while on the road between Bakersfield, CA and Fresno, CA. If I recall correctly, the ONLY thing I could get on the car radio was evangelical sermons and Spanish-language commentary. And yes, Spanish-language sermons as well.

While in Bakersfield, I stayed with my good buddy Ed.

However, given that the above are up-and-coming local bands, I encourage you to visit the discussion here for commentary on famous Japanese bands, e.g. Mr. Children, Do As Infinity, Bump of Chicken, etc.

When I become famous (yeah, baby, FOLK POP SUPERSTAR), I was thinking “Octopus Balls,” but that’s probably too tasteful for me :P

What name would you suggest?
Danny Katztag:dannykatz.com,2005:Post/1883472012-07-11T07:57:00-04:002022-03-07T03:10:51-05:00All your Engrish are belong to us (a/k/a Engrish bands of Fuchu)
Now that I’ve been in Japan almost six years (collectively - between touring, study abroad and vacations), I’ll admit to turning a blind eye to this lovely country’s rather special[?] mangling of the English language. As it’s come to be known, “Engrish” is so amusing that an entire online world has sprung up to spread its accidental pearls of wisdom - my two favorite websites being www.engrish.com and www.japander.com. The second is not Engrish per se, but seeing American celebrities endorse Japanese drinks is well worth the [free] price of admission. Also, my friend Laura’s Instagram feed features some hilarious Engrish examples.

Years ago (ok, last week), I found myself ranting to a Japanese/English bilingual friend about how Engrish is destroying the fabric of Japanese society and blah-blah-blah. While I was still foaming at the mouth, said friend calmly pointed out all the folks he’d seen in the U.S. sporting Japanese/Chinese kanji character tattoos, often written upside down or backwards, thereby cementing - beyond any shadow of doubt - that the tattoo wearer was clueless as to the meaning of the character.

(He then went on to remind me of a text message I had sent him which, in addition to being chock full of typos, “lols” and what could best be described as drunken sexting by someone without opposable thumbs, was rife for parody. We finally decided to agree that language has a tendency to evolve/devolve, for better or worse…)

So - with that, I would like to take a moment to present you with some cute band names as displayed on stickers affixed to the backstage area walls of Fuchu Flight.

NO SPEAK ENGLISH? SURELY, YOU JEST…

SECOND PANEL DOWN, LEFT SIDE. DEMON MONSTER BEST BE GIVING THE THUMBS UP AND NOT MAKING DEMON BABIES ::EWWWWWW::

But going back to the band names for just a second. This seriously makes me want a pet STRIP PARTY MONSTER:

I’m going to try taking more photos like this. Some of these designs are amazing(ly cute and Engrishy) #faceplant #whymonbushowhyyyyyyy <— Japan’s Education Ministry, a (possible) culprit in the rise of overpriced #英会話 schools

What’s your favorite band name from the ones above?
Danny Katztag:dannykatz.com,2005:Post/1882392012-07-11T03:33:37-04:002022-01-16T06:27:07-05:00K rhymes with heyyyyy
So I’m working on lyrics to thank folks who have pledged to my new album Kickstarter.

But rhyming Kickstarter is like trying to rhyme orange.

These are the best I could come up with. Aside from the fact that most sound like they’re insider pr0n lingo, they’re kinda nonsensical:

1. Hip farter (?)
2. Prick blotter (?!)
3. Lick (n) barter (…)
4. Thick Carter (too easy…)
5. Sick Darter (germaphobe?)
6. Buick Martyr (70s?)
7. Brick tartar (for the stone toothed foodies?)

so in my internet perusing i came across this clip featuring rick genest aka zombie boy. he is probably most famous for being in Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” video but i thought this clip gave a really cool opportunity to see what he would look like without all the tatts. the interesting thing is - he seemed most comfortable in his real skin as it is now all covered in tattoos. even though his look with all the cover up was what aught to be the more “natural” look between the two, his true identity is his tattoos and that is when he looked most natural and relaxed. goes to show - it never serves to try to fit into some mold that does not feel like you. you really must listen to your inner voice and follow your own personal path. when you stay true to yourself that is when you are your most authentic, that is when you shine, when you radiate and have the most impact and are the most beautiful.

bonus: here is the behind the scenes clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLpbMqQMelk&feature=fvwrel

Why Kickstarter? Because it’s time to record a new album!! You can preview the text version of the project here, but keep in mind there may be some last minute changes over the next few days.

But what better way to raise funds for an album full of new songs, than writing new songs to promote the project?! I’m thinking of doing this one 60s style with a few background singers. With apologies for any wonky formatting issues, any thoughts?

At the moment, the sitcom list is: 21 Jump Street, 227, 3-2-1 Contact, Charles in Charge, Cheers, Different Strokes, Family Ties, Gimme a Break, Golden Girls, Greatest American Hero, Growing Pains, Kids Incorporated, Laverne and Shirley, Mr. Belvedere, My Two Dads, Night Court, Out of this World, Perfect Strangers, Punky Brewster, Silver Spoons, The Facts of Life, Three’s Company, Who’s the Boss and WKRP. Any others you’d suggest?

Um, is that Casey Kasem sharing a drink with Cobra Commander?!

As for cartoon themes, I’m looking at: Bionic Six, Carebears, The Chipmunks, Duck Tales, Ewoks, Ghostbusters, GI Joe, Gummi Bears, He-Man, Inspector Gadget, Jem, Reading Rainbow, Silverhawks, She-Ra, The Smurfs, Transformers and Thundercats. Any others you’d like to hear?

Please retumble (?) this - I think the hive-mind might have a better memory than the rusted Betamax in my mind. And with that, this gem:

Indeed.
Danny Katztag:dannykatz.com,2005:Post/1861952012-07-04T09:48:02-04:002012-07-04T09:48:02-04:00TMNT Power?
I wish I could regulate the creative bug - seems that after two years of writer’s block, it’s like Pringles. I’m lying awake each night, my head swimming with melodies. But lacking the discipline to capture them then/there, I keep returning to the lyric notes I keep in Evernote like cocktail napkins.

Thinking it was a good idea to clear my head, I strolled by the park near my office. And was greeted by these lil guys:

They were there sunning. Seeing them in their natural environment doing what they do reminded me to just slow down. The songs will be written. The album will be made. And barring another earthquake or crazy natural disaster, I ain’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Danny Katztag:dannykatz.com,2005:Post/1861402012-07-04T07:01:00-04:002021-04-23T01:28:00-04:00Shibuya vs. Hachiko

Last night, I found myself in my favorite sensory overload vomit pit - Shibuya. The above photo (which I wish I had taken) makes it seem all pretty and orderly. But if you watch my music video for Sacramento, you can get the feel for being jostled into a lonely anonymity, while simultaneously being assaulted by three giant sized TVs blasting J-pop, bright lights flashing everywhere, and building size posters promoting prepubescent boy “bands” with names like “Sexy Zone.”

Oh Google Image Search, you never let me down. But seriously, aren’t these kids like… 5?

And yet, in the center of this madness, peeking out from clouds of cigarette smoke and tourist camera flashes, is the statue of Hachiko.

Shown here in the less manic daylight hours. I’m assuming those are just ordinary school kids and not another boy band in the making… #pray

I’ve been wanting to write a song as told by the Hachiko statue - but am struggling with the lyric. Not sure if it should focus on something as curmudgeonly pointed as “Japan’s post-bubble decline,” or make it more of a “marvel at Japan’s technological success and post-3/11 resilience.” Or something altogether different - such as the bonds that Hachiko represents - unconditional love, friendship, fidelity and loyalty.

What do you think the song should talk about?
Danny Katztag:dannykatz.com,2005:Post/1860612012-07-03T16:30:03-04:002012-07-03T16:30:03-04:00Kickstarter - What Teochew Say?Kickstarter - What Teochew Say?:
Just donated to this - language/culture preservation ftw!
Danny Katztag:dannykatz.com,2005:Post/1843052012-06-27T16:22:12-04:002017-01-13T13:15:49-05:00kudzumon:

Seriously, their 下駄(geta)? WANT!

We started rehearsal with an attempt at English to Japanese translation of the lyrics in “Sacramento,” focusing first on the chorus (“Oh - Sacramento / Give me something I can keep / Give me something to feel…”) and then the bridge (“As we volley words back and forth / This love plays out in syndication / Shadow-boxing back and forth / We play on and on in syndication.”)

Having done some Japanese to English copy writing, I figured lyrics would be challenging, but I hadn’t taken into consideration the emotional aspect of a breakup song - “Sacramento” was written in response to a 3 year relationship falling apart. To put it mildly, I was a hot mess when writing it.

In order for the translated “Sacramento” lyrics to fall close to the original English text (rather than just be a Japanese “version” of the song), I provided Tanaka-san (above right) with the background story. At one point, I was thinking “i ain’t got time for this i’m too grown,” but instead jokingly suggested he just translate “I’m sad / Yes I’m sad / My heart is broken / It’s very broken / Did I mention / Did I mention / That I’m sad?”

Afterwards, we switched to English lyrics for some of their songs. And worked on some three part harmonies.

I secretly envision us morphing into a Japanese version of Girlyman, if for no other reason than to take part selling their guitar swag:

After rehearsal, we scooted over to the local Saizeriya. While I regret not sampling the melamine-tainted pizza (?!), we did enjoy pressing the bootleg button to remind our waiter that we couldn’t eat without utensils:

PICTURED: BOOTLEG SPACE EGG

Towards the end of dinner, we were pretty punchy, resulting in gems like:

ULTRAMAN!

ULTRA WTF

A great rehearsal - I love working with these guys. But as I returned home, all I could think of was Martin’s take on Cee Lo:

“You’ve got me gigging at the ends of the earth and I, I’m like… FUCHUUUUU!!!”
Danny Katztag:dannykatz.com,2005:Post/1841262012-06-27T06:51:01-04:002012-06-27T06:51:01-04:00The Onion of Kickstarters
I was all dead-set on using Kickstarter, but then stumbled across the below gem from The Onion… once you sit through the stupid mandatory Starbucks advert, yee crowd-funding evangelists will watch and weep! By last night I had four song ideas, three new lyrics, two melodies… and a partridge in a Chanukah bush.

In hindsight, I suspect that the block was due to a severe lack of Calvin & Hobbes in my life:

MUCH BETTER.

Since the songs on “Japanese Satellites” were all about love, heartache, wanderlust, unrequited love and other things apt for a self-centered, myopic high school girl such as myself, with these new songs I’m hoping to tell other peoples’ stories. And by doing so looking into the interstices of culture shock, homesickness, love and home. Wash, rinse, repeat. Twang.

This August, I’ll be back in NYC for a bit for a wedding. While I was originally hoping to throw in some East Coast show dates, it’s looking now like The Bunker has a few days available for recording. NEW ALBUM OMNOMNOMNOM. Will you help with pre-sales, as part of TEAM DANNY?

I’m gonna be Kickstartering y’all with the intent of pilfering your hard-earned Starbucks money soon enough. Consider yourself warned.

Resistance is futile.

Thus proving you can find ANYTHING on the web. Seriously, who comes up with this brilliance?!
Danny Katztag:dannykatz.com,2005:Post/1834272012-06-25T11:06:49-04:002022-02-05T15:51:47-05:00And while we're on the topic of new songs...
You’re welcome.

Just replace it with songwriter or your angsty art profession of choice ^^
Danny Katztag:dannykatz.com,2005:Post/1834282012-06-25T08:43:30-04:002022-05-31T04:31:59-04:00Tech Fail for the Betterment of Musiciankind?
I recently asked a Japanese music duo that I occasionally co-bill with how they’ve gained their fans - their last gig having brought in almost 50 people.

I was under the assumption that they must have a full on website, Facebook page, and especially in Japan, an active Twitter. Turns out that not only do they not have ANY of these, aside from an occasionally updated blog, they’re never online.

They don’t even own a computer!

Meanwhile, here I am starting my day by reading 2 hours worth of music industry blog posts to learn the latest greatest ways to become the next Amanda Palmer.

Perhaps I’m doing something wrong… perhaps a lot of us are.

Their strategy seems distilled to the purest way to connect with fans. Write good music, be consistent with your branding (but not getting hung up on said branding), hustle and have a good sense of humor. ENTERTAIN. Every Wednesday, regardless of weather (including snowstorms), they are outside of their town’s main train station performing at 7pm. Fortunately, it’s a major transit hub so there’s a LOT of people coming through.

Folks in town recognize them. Every time they perform they have their demo CD and fliers properly displayed. While I don’t know how their earnings are on CD sales at those Wednesday evening busking-fests, they’re definitely getting people interested in taking a flier, seeing when they’re performing and most importantly, coming to their monthly showcases at a nearby music venue where tickets are around 2500 Yen each (without drinks).

I’m fascinated with new media, the “leveling of the playing field,” etc. but I’ll admit - hearing their success stories makes me happy. Sure I’m always gonna love my YouTube discoveries, but in many respects, I’m old fashioned when it comes to my music. Though this makes me sound like a navel-gazing curmudgeon, if you can’t perform, unedited, in front of people, how good a performer are you? Sure, editing is itself an art, but it’s hard for me to think of anything better than live performances.

As an aside, one thing that will definitely work in their favor? They’ve got high school girl fans. And anyone who knows the sweet demographic to pitch for in pop music, it’s the Belieber crew. That is - once you become “the in thing,” in the collective high school hive mind, you might as well be famous already. Granted, that might be at the expense of your dignity, but as they say, a gig’s a gig.

As an aside Part 2, back to writing blogs about music instead of writing a song XD Just kidding! New songs are on their way, and possibly a new album. If that pans out, I will obvs. promote it on Friendster. And MySpace. And Hi-Five :P
Danny Katztag:dannykatz.com,2005:Post/1831872012-06-25T06:19:39-04:002017-02-01T18:12:49-05:00StageYou, StageMe, StageIt Together, Ayo Technology? [Tour Journal: 6/24/12]
After a massive 25 minute #techfail yesterday (^^;), we were finally able to get our StageIt show off the ground and up onto the good ol’ Interwebs. Thanks all for your patience! #thisiswhydannycanthavenicethings #likeanipad.

Thanks to Tom for hosting us, to Fluter Scooter (surprise guest!) and Martin for bringing the music HARD and folktastic, and to all of you amazing fans.
(so yes, corn and mayo. #onlyinJapan)

Martin and I are thinking about hosting StageIt performances on a monthly basis, but with each show having a different theme. So far we’ve come up with songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s. That plus — I’m not-so-secretly pushing my (drag-queen) agenda via “The Miseducation of Kween Dandylion,” a show which I envision featuring folk/country musicians (in drag) doing Peter, Paul and Mary style versions of classic tracks by female MCs.

Thinking something along the lines of MC Lyte’s “Paper Thin” meets Peter Paul & Mary’s version of “Blowing in the Wind,” or Lil Kim on banjo: “How Many Twangs?” (“… he had a hurricane strum…” “…play guitar chord 8, oh oh oh”)

Ok fine, so I’m secretly just looking for an excuse to dress like Sailor Moon… Don’t hate. :P

Any theme ideas?
Danny Katztag:dannykatz.com,2005:Post/1829522012-06-23T19:35:33-04:002017-01-13T13:15:49-05:00Post show grub!
If you’re in town on Sat. July 7, I highly recommend checking out their show! Last time we shared the stage I ended up being their backup dancer. Yes, scrub your eyes. So there’s that. And ahh, here we go. This is what they look like:

And what did I learn that day? Wig caps can hurt. I had a ridiculous headache all during filming. Perhaps the agony was visible in my forced romantic “acting?”

In any event, thinking of bringing this song back into the setlist, though not sure how I can reproduce the insane UNTZ-UNTZ-UNTZ that we got in the studio. Any ideas from the Tumblr gallery? [Tour Journal: 6/19/12]

JJ’s pose is, in a nutshell, last night’s gig experience. While we all had an awesome time, it was a rather damp affair - seems that whenever I gig at Yokohama 7th Avenue, insane mecha typhoons attack.

Last time I gigged there was the same night Japan was hit by a typhoon with wind speeds that hadn’t been seen in over 50 years. So you can imagine the amusing scene of salarymen and office ladies huddled in fear by the Kannai Station exit, as sheets of rain sliced sideways through Yokohama and umbrella carcases danced in the wind.

Then there’s me, the “crazy gaijin” muttering “f*cking pussies” as I step outside, scream out “THIS! IS! YOKOHAMA!” and proceed to punch/swim my way to Yokohama 7th Avenue, umbrella and dignity almost crushed. Soaked from head to toe, all I could do was shake my fist at the sky screaming “F*CK YOU, WEATHER PATTERNS!!! F*CK YOUUUUUUUUUU” But I digress…

Given the weather, we were happy to play for an audience of 4(?) but hell if we didn’t rock out with our cocks out, as it were - which in typical Danny Katz style, goes a little something like this:

Me: “What key is this song in?”
JJ: “F*ck if I know - you wrote the damn thing!”
…
Me: “This next song is about my dark, cold, heart. It’s a love song.”
Shinji: “Danny - that’s not next. Next is the conveyer belt sushi song.”
Manuel: (SMH, SMH)

And… scene.

Here’s a photo of last night’s lineup:

The other musicians were quite good and played with the same dedication and professionalism that they would if the show had been sold out (or if - say, 5 people had decided to swim to the venue). Gotta love Japan for that! Always polished presentation.

First up was オレンジグライダー(Orange Glider) who played good, strong, solid Jpop. He was followed by 岩崎秀夫 (Hideo Iwasaki) - of 岩崎商店 (Iwasaki Showten) - who totally struck me as a band front man (in a good way). He sounded a bit like a rawer Mr. Children, and I adore their work.

Here’s me checking out his set:

Then we took the stage to do our… whatever it is we do.

The last act was one of my favorite Yokohama musicians. 笠川良明 (Yoshiaki Kasagawa) is an institution, having performed Yokohama 7th Avenue for 28 of the 30 years it’s been around. This was the first time seeing him gig solo (and, if I understood his Japanese correctly, the first time he’s played solo in almost 30 years!)

Fortunately, he’s just as compelling solo as he is with his band. Plus I was happy to see that my Engrish to English lyric revisions came in handy:

And here he is, singing “Wide Road” (formerly “Widely Road”):

Towards the end of his set, he called JJ, Manual, Shinji and I back to the stage for an awesome jam session.

On account of the typhoon, the venue canceled their usual 打ち上げ (after party) and the four of us headed out into the street to be promptly demolished by the storm. 12 hours later, I’m still… damp.

RAWK!
Danny Katztag:dannykatz.com,2005:Post/1820162012-06-19T08:44:00-04:002022-05-12T03:33:21-04:00Paul (Anka) and Ani (Difranco) sitting in a tree. S-t-r-u-mm-ing [?]
Since I forgot to invite my guitarists to last night’s rehearsal (what can I say, despite being in Japan, I’m still pulling Danny Katzes left, right and sideways) we ended up rehearsing as a trio: Me on acoustic guitar, JJ on bass and Manuel on drums.

The last time the Danny Katz experience sounded had that identical arrangement was probably in early 2000ish, during one of my many angry-folk-lesbian phases (i.e. when I was trying to be the next - and only - queer Asian/Jewish Ani Difranco). Dennis and Joe made for an awesome rhythm section (even if Dennis would occasionally show up at a gig 1 minute before we started our set, running on stage barefoot…) which forced me to really attack the acoustic guitar, not fall into the introspective, introverted folky thing I often default to.

Thinking that I can bring that style back, minus the politics since my songwriting now is all about “love and shit.” Plus, JJ and Manuel are totally in the pocket. Good grooves. And no one to spar with my flaming ego. Yeah, I can be a difficult band leader at times >:)

But we’ll see - my arrangement ideas change as often as I mismatch my socks. Which means, ALL THE F’N TIME. I’m still wanting to do some cheesy-ass big-band arrangement of my shit too…
Danny Katztag:dannykatz.com,2005:Post/1820172012-06-19T06:23:00-04:002021-04-16T05:20:40-04:00Danny & Martin's First International Internet Concert

Sunday’s “Shoestring Sessions” at The Lockley’s in Sugamo was amazing. So many talented artists all belting out their songs… no microphones, no amps. Just a lot of dancing, singing, shouting and… beer. Oh. So. Much. Damn. BEER. (It is, after all, an Irish Pub). Best part? Someone called the cops because we were too loud :S

Biggest surprise of the evening? The Dead Sea Dropouts. Never did I expect to hear Klezmer fusion played by Japanese, British (?) and Canadian (?) musicians in an Irish pub in a part of Tokyo known as the “Harajuku for Old People” (Sugamo)!

If video ever surfaces, I was the one screeching along to !הבה נגילה

Oh - and if anyone doubts the adage that Sugamo is for an older crowd, as we were approaching the venue, my bf pointed out all the stores with AED (Automated External Defibrillator)-certification/advertising. I’m just hoping all the ruckus didn’t send anyone over the edge (O_o)
Danny Katztag:dannykatz.com,2005:Post/1820192012-06-18T15:51:00-04:002012-06-18T15:51:00-04:00Danny Katz Summer Tour (so far!)
日付: 6/19(火)
時間: OPEN 18:30/START 19:00

11:00 - A vegan/vegetarian paradise in the middle of nowhere, Alishan is where I launched last year’s summer Japan your, jet lagged as hell having just gotten back from the West Coast. The cafe is beautiful, all wooden, overlooking a river. The cafe staff set up candles all around us. It was totally MTV Unplugged. And beautiful. And of course I forgot to take photos. If you’re in Tokyo, I highly recommend heading to Alishan. It’s a bit of a hike but the food, service and ambience are brilliant. And you can shop for vegan goods to bring home at their store :)
Danny Katztag:dannykatz.com,2005:Post/1820242012-06-16T03:26:04-04:002017-01-13T13:15:49-05:00Tonight’s charged phone brought to you by #darth (Taken...

Tonight’s charged phone brought to you by #darth (Taken with Instagram)
Danny Katztag:dannykatz.com,2005:Post/702552012-06-16T03:16:03-04:002022-05-28T05:21:39-04:00The female anime train conductor in the vending machine…?...

The female anime train conductor in the vending machine…?
