Hello all,
I hope you're surviving the summer heat! Tokyo is... warm and sticky. These things are making it bearable but still...

Thanks to you, TEAM DANNY raised over $3,000 towards the new album, which I'll be recording later this month at The Bunker Studio in Brooklyn. And I just checked out their client list - now you can tell people you know someone who is recording his new album in the same studio as Matisyahu, The Roots, The Black Keys, Moby and Dangermouse! Oooooh-aaaaaaaah... ::starf*cker::

I'm going to be documenting the entire recording process via social media so please connect with me at the below sites:

1. Do you want to get the official word on tours, past newsletters, press shots from when I had hair?

2. Do you want to stalk me, or at least to admire my badges?

3. Do you want to see 1-2 posts a day with links to articles pertaining to the music industry, announcements of upcoming shows and general Danny Katzishness (yes, including 80s song snippets and random photos)?

5. Do you want to watch my concerts, music videos and occasional 80s covers?

6. Do you want to learn more past shows and the state of the Japanese music industry?

7. Do you want to see random images of weird, quirky (and sometimes super-pretty) Japan?

8. Do you want to watch my live internet concerts (usually all request, solo and generally zany)?

Thanks as always for your support - without you, I wouldn't be able to keep living this 80s flavored folk-pop dream :)

Danny

Hey everyone,

First, in celebration of Passover, I ask the perennial question "Why on this night must a gay, interfaith couple have to deal with passive aggressive and intolerant family members?" Find out the answer to this question with your very own free download of
Passover!

Second, as promised, the West Coast tour continues. As most of the shows are free, I'll be donating a portion of CD proceeds towards Northern Japan to help with the long recovery they have ahead.

I hope to see you on the road!

Hey all,

As I'm sure you know, Japan was rocked by a devastating earthquake and tsunami on Friday, March 11, 2011. While Tokyo was spared any major damage - things here are about 75% back to normal and life goes on - the situation up North is unfortunately rather horrific. If you're interested in helping out with disaster relief efforts, please visit my blog (http://dannykatz.tumblr.com) where I suggest some organizations to consider working with.

If nothing else, this tragedy reminded me how important it is to
celebrate life with art whenever possible.

And it's on that note that I'm happy to announce the official release of the music video for "Taipei," the third single off of my "Japanese Satellites" album. Animated by my buddy Kachun Chan, "Taipei" is a beautiful animated video meditating on life, love, heartache and distance.

Please check it out, share it with friends and - if you're into
YouTube commenting - comment away!

And happy to say that despite all the craziness over here the past few weeks, the West Coast tour is going forward, details to follow soon.

Folktastic xo,
Danny

Hey all,

I hope this newsletter finds you fantabulous (and staying warm and snow-free)?

Preparations are well under way for my upcoming West Coast tour. I'll be sure to pass on exact details once I have them - but in the meantime, you can start marking your calendars (or... um, clicking your iCals and GCals?): California: 4/23-4/24 Los Angeles, 4/25 San Diego, 4/26 Bakersfield, 4/27 Sacramento, 4/28 Oakland, 4/29 Berkeley || Oregon: 4/30 Ashland, 5/1 Salem, 5/2 Portland || Washington: 5/3 Tacoma, 5/4 Bellingham || British Columbia: 5/5 Vancouver || Washington: 5/6-5/7 Seattle

As glorious as folk-rock world domination is, a lot of tour planning involves me sending out emails along the lines of "I'm the sexiest folk singer evar, please let me play at your splendid venue. I'll pay you in Care Bears" and then repeatedly refreshing my browser, wondering why I haven't gotten a response yet.

So what to do while waiting for validation? Make a new music video!

Whereas "Sacramento" uses the anonymity of Tokyo to highlight epic emo folk-pop loneliness, with "Revival" (Track 8 off of "Japanese Satellites") we filmed exclusively in the small city of Ichihara in Chiba prefecture (which, incidentally, is sister cities with Mobile, Alabama... thanks wiki!) to highlight... well, you tell me ;) Please join my YouTube family, comment away and forward along:

Revival Official Music Video

And, as promised, a big shout-out to the following folks for commenting on my "Sacramento" music video: Melicia Laroco, Amanda Yu, Dave Zhou, Mar Mangabat, Leah Hannah, Michael Kouri, Liman Cheng, Debby Katz and John Squires. You guys make my guitar ::twang::

Hey all,

A Happy and Healthy 2011! I got my New Years off to a lovely start with a late night house party followed by a drunken 3am sojourn to the super-crowded temples and shrines of Shiba Park. Ahh, New Years in Tokyo. Here’s a super-duper fuzzy cell phone picture from that:

And yesterday I officially welcomed in the Year of the Rabbit by going to a rabbit petting event in Ebisu. Cuteness overload!
But after a much needed break, things here at Danny Katz Music are kicking back into high gear with today’s launch of the official music video for “Sacramento!” I love how it shows a darker side o’ me while capturing the energy and loneliness that can define Tokyo:
Be sure to watch it in HD and lemme know what you think!

The very first 10 people to comment on it (on the YouTube page) will get a special thank you in my next newsletter... or video blog. Whichever comes first :)

Folktastic xo,
Danny

P.S. Thanks to the generosity of the following donors, we raised $1,215 towards my West Coast tour! Michelle Beninati, Cynthia Brothers, Joe Caputo, Matt Chesler, Dustin Chinn, Scott Dinsmore, Eliyahu Enriquez, Edward Finan, Mitchell Furumoto, Lorin Goldhirsch, Jean Gross, Kara Harris, Mandy Hu, Melicia Laroco, Adrian Leung, Seth Leger, Marilla Li, Tori Miyagi, Sherwin Montano, Ming Wong, Buckley Yung and three fine anonymous individuals, you rock my folk-pop socks.

Hey everyone,
I hope this edition of the Danny Katz Music newsletter finds you in the middle of holiday season merriment :)
I'm gearing up to celebrate a Jewish Christmas, Tokyo style, which means the Chinese food will be replaced by Japanese home cooking and the movie will probably be Tron, with Japanese subtitles... which is marginally better than the Japanese tradition of Kentucky Fried Chicken and illumination EVERYWHERE.
Suffice it to say Japan has some unique Christmas traditions that I still can't get my head around.
Thanks to all of you for sticking with me through another year of 80s flavored folk-pop madness. Your support as I live my wacky dreams is incomparable and I love you all.
Finally, while I know this is a bit early, Merry Christmas if you celebrate it - and Happy New Year!
Folktastic xo,
Danny
P.S. Fundraising for my West Coast tour ends this Saturday. Donate for the children! Donate for the folkies! Donate for Hanukkah Harry! Or just to make this Japanese/Jewish folk-pop musician be able to tour without drowning in debt ;-)

Hey everyone,
Fundraising for the West Coast tour ends in just 16 days (Christmas Day) and I’m hoping you can contribute a little something – think of it as a Christmas gift for your favorite Japanese/Jewish folk-pop musician ;-)
In addition to the funding perks described below, anyone who contributes will get a secret link to view my “Sacramento” music video, which doesn’t officially get released until next year!
Perks like coffee, bring it!
(1) The Sacramento ($10 minimum) - I’ll mail you a cute postcard from some highway rest-stop in the middle of West Bumblef*ck, where I will inevitably be lost and crying into the arms of a trucker. Or, if you prefer, I will try to make something out of origami. If I were you I would opt for the postcard. Trust me.
(2) The Modesto ($50 minimum) - I’ll mail you the above above-mentioned postcard as well as a shiny Japanese Satellites key-chain and a surprise tourist tchotchke (yes, I had to spell-check “tchotchke”)!
(3) The Yearning (San Francisco) ($100 minimum) - I’ll mail you the above-mentioned postcard, keychain, surprise tourist tchotchke and a pair of Japanese Satellites sneakers! Stylish, comfortable and lightweight. I’m wearing a pair right now and I look folktastically fly. Werd.
(4) The Breakfast (SeTac) ($300 minimum) - All the above and a thank you in “Orbiting: A Folktastic Journey,” my documentary of this tour and a behind-the-scenes look at Danny Katz in all his a.d.d. glory. Plus be interviewed for the documentary if our schedules meet up.
(5) The Taipei ($500 minimum) - Several custom-designed Flip video cameras will be used to film this tour. One of these super-limited-edition cameras can be yours. Own a piece of folk-pop history. ::sparkles::
(6) The Japanese Satellite ($1,000 minimum) - All the above and… production credits in any printed and media material listed as “Produced By...” credits.

And finally, big thanks go to the following donors! Michelle Beninati, Joe Caputo, Matt Chesler, Dustin Chinn, Scott Dinsmore, Eliyahu Enriquez, Edward Finan, Mitchell Furumoto, Lorin Goldhirsch, Jean Gross, Kara Harris, Mandy Hu, Ming Wong, Buckley Yung and two fine anonymous individuals. I. What Folks Are Saying About “Japanese Satellites”
So maybe you haven’t gotten your hands on a copy because you haven’t seen enough tasty testimonials? Here are some for your viewing pleasure.
Danny's website describes him as 80s flavored folk-pop. I described him as FREAKING GENIUS. His music is both fun (“Passover” actually samples the melody to the Four Questions... hello!?! Genius.) and sad (“Bushwick” is by far my favorite track). His style is clean and sweet and consistent throughout the album but each song has a distinct personality.
- Amanda E. di Bartolomeo | Queer Vegan Runner

Just got your CD in the mail. It's so great! “Fall in Michigan” has made me cry several times already!
- Mandy Hu

“Japanese Satellites” is a sonically-cohesive body of work that... brings together the past and the present, reviving the old-school charm of 70's and 80's rock music and combining them with modern lyrical sensibilities... [and] a live, organic sound... Katz proves himself to be a gifted songwriter and storyteller with Satellites. In his straightforward but forthcoming lyrics, [he] appeals not only to our taste for old-school rock but also to our innate ability to find humor in our lives and our relationships.
- Jason Chu | SFGam

Danny, your CD arrived in the mail the other day. I've been playing it in the car all the time. Awesome!!!
- Eddie Finan

It's been said that what's real doesn't get recognized. True... yet Danny Katz is real, and with this album he truly needs to be recognized. Take a listen to “Bushwick” and “Revival.” Danny has a knack for tight acoustic gems with more hooks than the Tsukiji fish market. He gives us a much needed breath of musical life within tunes that you'll be humming for some time to come.
- Pump24 (iTunes)

Hey Danny, just got a copy of your CD “Japanese Satellites.” Really like it!
- Leonard Calo

“Japanese Satellites” plays homage to so much... yet... displays enough of its own originality... I recommend getting the whole album. It’s that good and it has a lot to offer. - Eric Barnes | Gaijinass

My commute: sacraments+mementos, wish lists+misgivings in @DannyKatzMusic's playful semantic Japanese Satellites.
- John Won

Each of us have that favorite type of music which soothe our nerves and calm the soul. And it was exactly how I felt when I listened... [H]is music... makes you just want to sit back, sink onto a bean bag and be carried away... The lyrics are a little eccentric and wacky at some places, but that’s what make Danny’s work so different and refreshing... Instantly likable and very easy on the ears. How would I know? Considering I have been streaming his songs for eight hours now... you could say I am a convert.
- Razlan Manjaji | You Got Me Blogging

[Danny’s] first track “Bushwick” has a delicate introduction, his vocals soft yet strong. I can imagine that Danny can sing just about anything, his vocals would definitely suit an acoustic set in a mellow atmosphere... and as the tracks continue to make my ears happy it feels like each song is a chapter... His music feels true, unique and soulful... Katz has produced a very extraordinary album here... You can feel the passion in Katz' voice throughout.
- Suzie Kidger | New Reviews

What we have here is an album full of mellow, acoustic-laden radio-rock in the vein of Coldplay and Ben Folds... The dude is obviously very talented musically, touting a strong singing voice as well as guitar and piano playing abilities... “Sacramento”... is a slow tempo excursion that makes use of standard acoustic chords laid underneath whirring, minimalistic guitar lines with the reverb and effects pedals cranked. Katz’s voice is mellow and crooning... Everything goes together perfectly to make a cohesive, airy ballad I feel like I should be floating on a cloud while listening to.
- Joe Vena | Stereokiller

II. The Stories Behind the Music (click the links for the full interview text)
a. On what I’ve been listening to lately: “Everything’s Easy” by Girlyman. They should have named it “Danny Katz is Easy” but that goes without saying....” - BiCoastal Bitchin
b. On career choices: “...I mean—I had been performing for years at that point... if I can’t match my socks in the morning how good a lawyer could I possibly be? Flirting with the judge will not a good trial make...” - Channel APA
c. On unusual show pranks: “... had a drunken man - who claimed to be Richie Havens' brother - come up on stage during a show years back, interrupt my set, and then tell me I was playing the djembe all wrong, while proceeding to give me a demonstration that I never asked for. That was quaint...” - Vents Magazine
d. On the first concert I remember: “... A Jewish folk singer... I remember the chorus to "Bashana HaBa'ah" getting stuck in my head right then and there, so catchy. I also remember looking up and thinking "omgs rockstrrrr" or however a kindergarten kid talks when he's excited enough to pee in his pants...” - TuneCore

III. Remixes
How many folkies can say they got remixed by a BOXER?! Check out this neat video by Sonny Zhang, who boxes along with my folk version of Missy Elliot’s “Work It.”

IV. Radio Spins
“Taipei,” the first single off of “Japanese Satellites” has been featured on The Songwriter’s Network and Mvyradio.com Presents. More radio to follow with a major radio campaign in the spring.

V. Music Videos
“Taipei’s” getting an awesome flash animation music video treatment. Think Gorillaz but soft, emo and folky. Look for it this January! Also working on videos for “Sacramento” (live action scenes shot all around Tokyo) and “Bushwick” (claymation!)

VI. Social Media World Domination
a. My new website is up and running. Swing on by and show it some love (and offer your feedback as well)!
b. Although you can view my blog here, if you prefer to fatten your blogroll (sounds saucy!) you can add me at WordPress and/or Tumblr.
c. They’re heeeeeeeeeeere! Folky video covers of songs you know and love - complete with quirky DannyKatz-esque annotations. Danny does Lady Gaga? Bring it! Well, minus the lobster claws/shoes/meat dress...
d. Are you Twitterific? Follow me.
e. Validate my insecure and frail 16 year old facebook ego here.

VII. Le Tour
Preparations are under way for my first ever West Coast tour! Tentative tour dates fall between April 23 and May 7 of next year. Details to follow by February, but if you live in either any of the following cities, I hope to see you: Bakersfield, CA, Bellingham, WA, Los Angeles, CA, Portland, OR, Sacramento/Davis, CA, Salem, OR, San Diego, CA, San Francisco/Oakland, CA, San Jose, CA, Santa Ana/Irvine, CA, Seattle, WA, Tacoma, WA, Vancouver, BC.

The. End.

Hoping for 4/23/11 - 5/7/11 or thereabouts – starting in San Diego and working my way up to Vancouver. Crazy? Yes. But so am I.

In the meantime, here are links to two wonderfully fun interviews - the first with Cbruhs of the BiCoastal Bitchin blog and the second with Channel APA: 1. http://bicoastalbitchin.com/2010/07/27/bcb-profilin-danny-katz/.
2. http://www.channelapa.com/2010/08/danny-katz-new-album-new-home-more-music.html
Read 'em and weep, kiddies.

And if you haven’t yet ordered your shiny copy of “Japanese Satellites,” please email me for a copy. At $10 a pop it’s a bargain. Plus you can bundle it with my 2006 “Strangely Beautiful” for just $12. Bargain in the TYO (Tokyo)!

If you prefer iTunes, you can find “Japanese Satellites” here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/japanese-satellites/id348887530

Finally, my new website needs some love: www.dannykatz.com – please check it out and gimme gimme feedback. From there you can link to my other sites if you haven’t yet (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) plus you can preview the entire album with the embedded music player at the bottom of the front page.

Thanks for the continued love and support. You make my folk-tastic nipples explode with delight, as it were.

Danny Katz
